Exploring the Legendary Devil's Bridge of Martorell, Spain

The Devil’s Bridges are a fascinating feature found in several cities throughout Italy and Europe. They are typically known for their impressive spans that stretch over deep ravines or fast-flowing rivers, reminding us of a time when certain architectural feats were seen as so daring they were thought to be the work of the devil.

One such intriguing bridge can be found in Spain, reflected in the waters of the Llobregat River, connecting Martorell and Castellbisbal. This bridge originally dates back to 1283, replacing an earlier Roman structure that still has remnants visible today. The most recent version of the bridge was completed in 1965, after it was blown up in 1939 during the Civil War. The original stones were recovered and reused in its reconstruction, similar to what happened with the bridge in Mostar in the 1990s.

Although it has been built, destroyed, and rebuilt by human hands rather than by the devil, the bridge still stands strong. It features pointed arches and a steep incline, with a smaller arch on top added to ensure stability. If you’re visiting Barcelona, you can admire this historical structure by taking the A7, the Mediterranean highway, to the northwest.
