If you’re a fan of castles, Finland should definitely be on your travel list. One of the country’s most compelling attractions is Olavinlinna, a castle situated on a small island surrounded by lakes and forests near the Russian border.

Constructed in 1475, Olavinlinna served as a stronghold in a region contested by Sweden and Russia. The castle was central to numerous conflicts, with the Russians ultimately seizing control in 1714 and holding it until 1917. Its turbulent history can be seen in its structure: one side features round towers with small openings, while the other side, likely modified for the use of firearms, has low, sharp-edged towers.

Olavinlinna also holds a wealth of mystery and legend, including tales of ghosts haunting its walls. Inside, you’ll find a small museum detailing the history of the Garrison and another focused on the Orthodox religion. However, don’t expect to see much in the way of furniture or paintings, as two fires in 1860 destroyed most of the original interiors.
