Cabo San Lucas is a resort town located at the southern tip of Baja. This slender cape has developed into a tourist hotspot over the past forty years. During the Spanish era, it served as a harbor for conquistadors, but due to a lack of fresh water and ample protection, it was often bypassed and frequently hit by storms. Pirates also found it a strategic hiding place to attack galleons filled with trading materials, leaving behind several historical stories about the area.

In the 30s, Cabo San Lucas saw the emergence of fishing villages and canneries, with a population of fewer than a thousand people. Tourism began to take off in the 50s and 60s as anglers and boaters started frequenting the area. Known as Marlin Alley for its billfishing activities, the town’s popularity grew, and its population reached thousands. The construction of the transpeninsular highway in the 70s linked North America to Cabo San Lucas, making it accessible for automobiles, boats, and RV travelers. The journey from the Cape to the borders took around six days until the Los Cabos International Airport was built, simplifying travel for vacationers.

As highways and other developments came into the area, Cabo San Lucas became a popular destination for those visiting Mexico. It is one of the fastest-growing resort communities, with a population of nearly 50,000, mostly retirees. During the peak season from November to February, tourists outnumber the locals. Along with San Jose del Cabo, which boasts beautiful beaches, Cabo San Lucas is preferred for its sport fishing and recreational activities.

Despite being a major tourist attraction, Cabo San Lucas retains a small-town feel. Popular attractions include the marina, the underwater nature preserve, and the Land’s End rock formations. After sightseeing, visitors can enjoy a pristine beach right around the corner. However, ongoing development means hotels and condos continue to be built each year, despite efforts to preserve the natural environment. The town is surrounded by these accommodations, making it unique as the only coastal resort with a natural preserve. Pedregal and Playa el Medano are filled with villas, condos, and golf courses. Additionally, five cruise lines include Cabo San Lucas in their itineraries.
