When we talk about sand islands, the largest ones are in Queensland, Australia. The biggest among them is Fraser Island, which is famously known for its stunning lake and beautiful marine waters.

Following Fraser Island, there’s North Stradbroke Island also in Queensland, and Moreton Island, the third largest sandy island in the world. Moreton Island is almost entirely protected as a national park and is about 75 minutes from Brisbane by ferry, making it a favorite getaway spot for locals.

On the island, there are three small villages: Bulwer, which is the most popular, Cowan Cowan, known for its tranquility and family-friendly atmosphere, and Kooringal, which is favored by oyster lovers. There’s also Tangalooma, the most exclusive spot on the island.

A popular activity on Moreton Island is driving along the 40 kilometers of coastline with a 4×4 vehicle. If you don’t have a permit to drive one, you can easily rent a 4×4 cab to explore. From June to November, many head to Cape Moreton to witness the annual whale migration.
