Kefalos: The Crown Jewel of Kos

Visiting Kos, the island of Hippocrates, is incomplete without a trip to Kefalos, a village on the island’s west side, known as the “head of Kos.” This scenic village offers a blend of sea and mountain views, with one of the island’s most beautiful sights, the Kastri (Castle). This rocky islet hosts the church of St. Nicholas and is accessible by swimming or jet skiing from the nearby beach.
Near the islet, you can explore ancient monuments and the Agios Stefanos beach. Some of the most popular beaches in Kefalos include Paradise Beach, Markos Beach, Cavo Paradiso, Camel Beach, Agios Stefanos, and Sunny Beach. The crystal-clear waters make these beaches a favorite spot for both tourists and locals.
To get to these beaches, you can rent a car or use the KTEL bus services, which have various routes to accommodate tourists. In the evening, the port area known as ‘Kamari,’ with its view of the illuminated Kastri, is perfect for a leisurely walk and a drink by the sea. There are numerous hotels and hostels for accommodation, and dining options range from seaside taverns to eateries in the village. Be sure to try the local cuisine and desserts, especially those made with the famous local honey.
If you visit Kefalos in July or August, don’t miss the local festival (panigyri) on July 26th in honor of Agia Paraskevi. Other notable events include the celebration of the Assumption of Virgin Mary on August 15th and a festival for Agios Ioannis (St. John) on August 29th. Even in October, there’s an organized tour of the area, and in February and March, the locals celebrate with a vibrant carnival.
