Spotted Lake, situated near Osoyoos, spans 38 hectares and is famous for its unusual appearance. It features over 365 distinctive groups, gaining its name from these spots. The lake’s water is rich in various natural minerals, including calcium sulfate, sodium, magnesium, silver, and titanium. During the summer, as the lake dries, the evaporating water and mud form white shapes and circles in pale yellow, green, and blue tones. These striking colors vary based on the specific mineral content of each section of the lake. Historically, locals considered the lake sacred and believed its mud and water had healing properties. They used it to alleviate aches and pains. Interestingly, during World War I, the lake’s minerals were utilized to produce ammunition.
