Orvieto is a charming town in the heart of Umbria, often considered a true gem for art lovers, nestled against a backdrop of tuff cliffs. Its history stretches back to the ancient Etruscans, though evidence from that time is scant. One major remaining site from those times is the Necropolis of the Crucifix of Tufo, a typical Etruscan city of the dead from the sixth and fifth centuries BC. This site consists of about a hundred small, double shrine-tombs arranged in a grid. Many of these tombs are open to the public, and artifacts and sarcophagi discovered there are primarily housed in the Faina Museum of Orvieto.<\/p>\n
The city’s most iconic landmark is the Cathedral of Orvieto, a quintessential example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in central Italy. Its facade is adorned with bas-reliefs, mosaics, and bronze statues, while the interior features intricate frescoes. The highlight of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Corporal, which contains a precious relic: a linen cloth stained with blood during the miracle of Bolsena. Visiting the cathedral is especially magical in the evening when the setting sun casts a warm glow on the tuff facade.<\/p>\n
Don’t miss the Palaces of the Popes, built in the 1200s to honor pontiffs. The Soliano Palace, dedicated to Boniface VIII, now serves as the Museum Opera del Duomo and is a striking Gothic structure. Another notable building is the Town Hall, originally constructed in the early 1200s and rebuilt in the 1500s.<\/p>\n
The Well of St. Patrick, built in the mid-1500s by order of Pope Clement VII during his refuge following the sack of Rome, is another must-see. This well is 53 meters wide and 13 meters deep and was designed as a water reservoir to protect the city during sieges. Beneath the city’s churches and palaces lies “underground Orvieto,” an elaborate network of tunnels and cellars used for food storage by ancient inhabitants, intersecting with Etruscan tunnels.<\/p>\n
