Catherine Palace in Pushkin, the Tsar\u2019s private retreat, is located about 25 km south of St. Petersburg. This was the summer residence of Catherine I and is a prime example of rococo architecture, reflecting the opulence of the Tsars, especially the Empresses.<\/p>\n
Originally built in the eighteenth century, the palace reflects the evolving tastes of its various rulers over time. It became famous for its lavish use of gold\u2014over 100 kg was used to decorate the facade. However, Catherine II later removed the gold because she found it excessive and out of style.<\/p>\n
The interior of the palace is just as grand, featuring valuable works of art. Each room is adorned with period-specific furniture, carpets, and luxurious decorations. Notable rooms include the Grand Ballroom, designed by Rastrelli, which boasts gilded wood carvings and enormous mirrors that were the backdrop for grand balls. The Green Dining Room, decorated in Pompeian style with bas-reliefs, and the Amber Room, famed for its amber panels and intricate Florentine mosaics, are also highlights.<\/p>\n
The palace was looted by the Germans during World War II but has since been meticulously reconstructed. Today, it’s one of St. Petersburg\u2019s top tourist attractions. Visitors should make sure to see the entrance through the French gate, the Amber Room, and the beautiful gardens.<\/p>\n
To get there from central St. Petersburg, you can take a train or a mini-bus. It\u2019s advisable to book reservations for groups in advance, as there are often long lines at the entrance. The entrance fee is 100 rubles, roughly around 2.5 euros.<\/p>\n
