Imagine stepping off a train with a suitcase and discovering that the sea-view hotel on your shortlist sits well above the harbor. A map made the distance look tiny, but the walk involves stairs and the afternoon heat makes every bag feel heavier. This is a hypothetical arrival, yet it captures the most useful question for a car-free Amalfi Coast holiday: how will you move between the room, the dock and dinner? A beautiful balcony is only part of the purchase. The better base is the one that supports your particular rhythm, whether that means several boat outings or two quiet days near the water. Plan access first, then spend on the view you will actually have time to enjoy.

THE SHORT VERSION

For a car-free stay, choose a base around the journeys you intend to make and verify the walk to its harbor or bus stop. Treat ferry schedules as date-specific. Skip a remote hillside bargain if transfers, stairs and luggage assistance erase the saving or limit your evenings.

Compare towns by daily access rather than reputation

Amalfi can be a logical focus when your intended outings depart from its harbor, while a Salerno base may suit a trip that also depends on rail connections. Positano appeals to travelers prioritizing that setting, but the exact accommodation access is crucial. Avoid assuming all addresses within a town offer the same convenience.

Create a small map with the arrival point, lodging entrance, restaurant options and departure dock. Ask the property how many stairs lie on the usual route and whether bags can be collected. A written access description is more helpful than the phrase close to the beach, which says little about the slope between them.

Choose the right Salerno pier before booking the room

Travelmar’s October 2026 timetable lists Piazza Concordia, labelled for the train station, separately from Molo Manfredi. A ticket saying Salerno is not enough to plan the final walk. Match the precise departure pier on your chosen sailing to your train arrival and accommodation address, then use a map to check the route with luggage.

For a late arrival, write down the train station, the hotel entrance and the next day’s departure pier as three separate places. Ask whether you can leave luggage before check-in or after checkout. Do not pay extra for a harbour-view room simply because you assume every Salerno ferry leaves from the closest quay. A modest room with a straightforward arrival can be more useful than a balcony that complicates every connection.

Check the ferry calendar before the room calendar

Open the operator’s current timetable from its own download page, rather than a saved summer screenshot or an undated search result. The Travelmar sheet available when this guide was updated is marked from October 1 and describes an annual service. That does not mean every destination or departure operates unchanged throughout winter. Check the exact route and date before choosing a non-refundable room.

Build each outing around a comfortable return service, leaving room for lunch and a walk without racing the clock. If a particular boat connection is essential, check ticket conditions and the operator's advice. Your final night before a flight may be better positioned near the onward transport route than at the furthest scenic stop.

For an autumn or winter visit, compare the available outward and return journeys before planning a full day in another town. Keep a note of the operator’s latest service notice, not just the timetable. If the timetable does not cover your date, treat that connection as unconfirmed. A hotel discount is not useful if the transport needed to reach it remains an assumption.

Buy separate legs if you want a stopover

Travelmar’s FAQ says it does not sell a daily ticket for visiting both Amalfi and Positano. It also says a Salerno–Positano ticket does not let you get off in Amalfi and continue on a later sailing: buy Salerno–Amalfi and Amalfi–Positano separately if you want that stop.

For a day that starts in Salerno, pauses for a walk in Amalfi and continues to Positano, write out all three legs, including the trip home. Check each departure and each fare before buying. Leave a proper gap for your walk, lunch and boarding, and keep the return manageable. A through journey shown in a booking result is different from your own sightseeing stop. If that sequence creates an anxious afternoon, choose one town and enjoy it properly instead.

Keep one backup that does not depend on the sea

A car-free plan still needs flexibility when a boat journey changes. Ask your accommodation about practical alternatives and check local ground-transport information shortly before travel. Do not chain a ferry arrival, a distant transfer and a nonrefundable activity so tightly that one delay disrupts the whole day.

A private transfer can be useful for the arrival or departure leg, especially with family luggage, but compare vehicle capacity and all charges. It does not solve every narrow-street or stair access problem. Confirm the pickup and drop-off locations in writing, including any final walk to your room.

Before an essential flight or train connection, decide what you will do if the boat cannot operate: stay near your onward route the night before, use a ground transfer confirmed for your party, or change the day’s plans. Check the operator’s instructions about luggage and boarding when purchasing. Do not interpret a listed ferry as a guarantee that separate train or activity tickets will be protected if it is delayed.

Decide what a boat excursion adds

A sightseeing cruise and a transport ferry serve different needs. A ferry gets you between places; an excursion may include swimming, a host or time on the water without a destination schedule. Pay for an excursion when those elements matter, rather than expecting an ordinary transport ticket to provide them.

Read the vessel type, passenger limit, shaded seating, boarding arrangement and cancellation terms. Travelers who struggle with motion sickness should think carefully about a long outing and seek appropriate professional advice where needed. A short harbor-side lunch and a simple point-to-point ride may be a better fit than a full-day cruise.

Choose the view after the logistics are settled

Compare a lower-level practical room with a hillside balcony room using the full stay cost. Include porter assistance if charged, transfers, breakfast and the likelihood of taxi journeys. A terrace has value when you plan slow mornings and evenings; it contributes less when every day begins with a departure from the dock.

Ask whether the pictured balcony belongs to the exact room category and whether it is private. Check noise, air conditioning and cancellation deadlines. For a short trip, one comfortable base often beats several hotel moves. Fewer check-ins mean more time to sit with the coast instead of repeatedly organizing luggage.

A few useful questions

Is a rental car necessary?

Not for every coastal itinerary. Choose accessible lodging and confirm transport for your dates. A car becomes more relevant for dispersed inland stops, but it introduces parking and driving considerations.

Can I book ferries at the last minute?

Availability depends on the sailing and season. Check the operator's booking guidance, and avoid leaving an essential departure connection to an assumption about spare capacity.

Does a Salerno–Positano ticket let me spend time in Amalfi?

Travelmar says no: for an Amalfi stopover, buy the Salerno–Amalfi and Amalfi–Positano legs separately. Also plan and price your return. Check the current operator conditions before payment.

Should I assume ferries stop everywhere at the end of October?

No. Check the operator’s current route-specific timetable for your date. Travelmar’s October 2026 sheet describes an annual service, but that does not confirm every port or sailing throughout winter. Missing dates remain unconfirmed, and conditions at sea can change the plan.
