Imagine arriving after a wedding week, ready to put away the schedule, only to discover that your photogenic villa is a long buggy ride from dinner and its terrace faces a busy walkway. A honeymoon booking carries a lot of expectation, which makes it easy to buy the photograph instead of the stay. Begin with the ordinary hours: where you will have coffee, how you will reach the beach, whether you want conversation at the pool or time alone. Then decide which special extra would improve those hours. A private pool may be wonderful if you intend to use it every day. It is less compelling when your plan involves boat trips, restaurant reservations and exploring the island from morning until evening.

THE SHORT VERSION

Choose the hotel for the rhythm you want together, and the room for a specific benefit such as privacy, direct outdoor space or an easier walk. Spend less on decorative package extras if they displace meals or experiences you care about. Confirm the room category's actual features before treating a villa photograph as a promise.

Write down two versions of your ideal day

One partner might picture breakfast on the terrace and an afternoon in the water; the other might want market visits and a cooking class. Sketch a relaxed day and an active day, including meals and transport. A resort that suits both avoids turning every outing into negotiation. This exercise also reveals how much time you will realistically spend inside an upgraded room.

Compare location with destination plans. If several dinners will be outside the resort, check the journey back after dark. A remote setting is valuable when seclusion is the point, but less appealing when you will pay for repeated transfers to find the atmosphere you wanted.

Make privacy a question rather than an adjective

Ask whether a terrace or pool is visible from neighboring rooms, public paths or restaurant seating. Look at the resort map and category floor plan, and ask about the position of rooms within that category. Private use does not automatically mean complete visual seclusion. A small screened terrace can suit you better than a larger exposed deck.

Room labels deserve close reading. Six Senses Samui's accommodation page distinguishes its Hideaway Villa, which has no private infinity pool, from pool categories. That is a useful reminder to compare the written category details rather than assume every villa at a resort shares the same feature.

Budget for meals you will enjoy

Review the dining options and menus before selecting a package. An included meal can reduce daily decisions, but check which outlets and dishes qualify and whether drinks or supplements remain separate. A resort with one appealing restaurant may feel limited over a long stay. A room-only rate near independent restaurants can be the more flexible purchase.

Treat a romantic dinner as its own product: location, menu, weather alternative and service timing matter. Compare it with simply reserving a table you both want. Flowers and a bottle in the room are pleasant touches, but they should not absorb the money needed for a memorable evening.

Protect arrival and departure days

Build the transfer into your budget and your energy plan. Ask whether it operates late, where you meet the driver, and what happens if the flight moves. For island stays, confirm the connection rules before booking separate flights. Two hotels with similar room rates can produce very different door-to-door journeys.

Keep the first evening light. A prepaid activity immediately after arrival creates pressure if luggage is delayed or you are tired. If a late checkout matters, ask whether it can be confirmed for a charge and compare that with storing bags and using shared facilities. Do not count an unconfirmed request as part of the package.

Buy one memorable upgrade deliberately

Choose one extra that reflects your interests: a room with usable outdoor space, a guided day together, or a longer stay in a comfortable category. Splitting every night across upgraded rooms, transfers and special dinners can make a honeymoon feel hurried. A consistent base gives you room to change your mind.

Save the room description and package inclusions at booking. Add a brief note about bedding and privacy priorities, while understanding that requests may remain subject to availability. A clear confirmation is more valuable than a vague expectation that mentioning the occasion will produce complimentary upgrades.

A few useful questions

Should we book a honeymoon package automatically?

Compare each included item with what you would choose separately. Pay for useful inclusions and confirmed arrangements, rather than the package title.

Can we rely on a free upgrade for our honeymoon?

No. Mention the occasion if you wish, but book a category you would be happy to keep. Any essential feature should appear in the reservation.
