Exploring Amsterdam’s Rich Tapestry of Tattoo Art at the Museum

One of the latest attractions in the city is a unique shop where you can find special travel souvenirs: the Tattoo Museum in Amsterdam, located at 62 Plantage Middenlaan. This museum is dedicated to the art of tattooing and houses around 24,000 themed items from the impressive collection of Henk Schiffmacher, a renowned artist who has designed tattoos for famous bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain. Recently, it was honored as the best museum during the Museum Night 2012 Awards, which saw 50 museums in Amsterdam open at night on November 3rd.
The space is highly specialized and even includes a tattoo shop called The Tattican, which is open every day. You can visit just to look around, and they often host events where tattoo artists perform live.
According to the Guardian, the museum is housed in two Belle Epoque-style buildings with vibrant interiors decorated with shrines, paintings, writings, and photographs. The ground floor focuses on tribal tattoos and ethnography, featuring artwork from Africa to the Pacific Ocean. Upstairs, you’ll find tattoo artists who specialize in various decorative styles, with a popular trend being religious iconography.
The museum offers a unique charm and even provides insights into historical travel details. In addition to its exhibition space, there is a cafeteria with scenic traditional-style windows, a library, and seminars by Dan Dringenberg for those eager to learn more. Entry for groups of up to 15 people costs 75 euros, while individual tickets are priced at 10 euros.
