Kerala’s Breathtaking Coastal Gems

Southern Kerala is known for its pristine waterfronts, vibrant coastal culture, and Ayurvedic resorts that perfectly blend beach life with soothing treatments. There are three beautiful beaches here: Hawa Beach, Lighthouse Beach, and Samudra Beach. Their soft sand, swaying palm trees, and crescent-shaped shorelines have attracted international visitors for nearly a century, making this southern state an ideal retreat destination.

Kovalam is situated not far from Trivandrum, the state capital. Its 17 km (10.6 mi) coastline is divided into three distinct beaches—Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach, and Samudra Beach—separated by rocky outcrops. The largest and liveliest of the three is Lighthouse Beach, featuring a bustling promenade with open-air restaurants. Kovalam is also a sought-after surfing spot in India.

Varkala Beach stands out for its ambiance and amenities. Despite the growing number of tourists each year, it remains less crowded than Kovalam and boasts stunning scenery. The beach is located at the base of a long cliff, lined with beach shacks and shops. You can choose to stay on the cliff with ocean views or a bit further back. It’s a highly romantic spot, popular with young travelers and couples. Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasham Beach, is said to have waters that cleanse one’s sins. Beyond its spiritual allure, Varkala is perfect for sunbathing and is a must-visit for all kinds of travelers due to its untouched beauty.

Located in a serene village in the Allapuzha district, Marari Beach is renowned for its tranquility. It was named one of the world’s top five ‘Hammock Beaches’ by National Geographic. The Marari Beach Resort, a major attraction here, is an eco-friendly establishment set amidst coconut groves and lotus ponds. They offer Ayurveda treatments and yoga classes right on the beach.

In northern Kerala, the town of Kannur is famous for its secluded beaches. The Thottada beach area, for instance, has several charming and affordable beach houses, such as the Kannur beach house.

Bekal Beach, located in far north Kerala (about an hour’s drive from Mangalore airport in Karnataka), is known for its historical fort—the largest in Kerala. The beaches here are clean and relatively untouched, though luxury hotels are starting to emerge, making it a prime spot for a lavish escape. Staying here can cost under 9,000 rupees per night, depending on the season.

Cherai Beach is on Vypeen Island, reachable from Kochi by ferry followed by a bus or auto-rickshaw ride through villages and paddy fields. Although somewhat isolated, the main beach area has been recently beautified, including a new walkway. One of the unique features of this location is the proximity of the beach to a lagoon, offering stunning views if you explore the nearby lanes.
