Exploring the Historic Charm of Lëkurës Castle in Saranda, Albania

Lëkurës Castle, constructed by Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, in 1537, was built to oversee Saranda Bay and serve as a strategic point for the conquest of Corfu across the water. Over time, the castle fell into disrepair, but its two imposing towers still stand over its terraces and walkways, offering a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. Nowadays, it’s a popular spot for tourists, not only for its historical significance but also for the stunning views and the delicious Albanian cuisine—featuring meat and vegetables—offered by the restaurant within the castle.
Located in southern Albania near the border with Greece, close to the city of Saranda, this region has a rich history. Saranda was renamed Porto Edda during Italian rule (1939-1944) in honor of Mussolini’s daughter, Edda Ciano Mussolini. Today, Saranda has grown into a bustling tourist center that is gaining recognition beyond Albania’s borders.
From Saranda, you can reach Corfu in just half an hour by ferry. Additionally, within half an hour, you can visit the archaeological site of Butrint, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
